Double-blind crossover human study: topical 40% menthol activated and sensitized cutaneous cold-sensitive vasoactive C-nociceptors, producing cold and punctate hyperalgesia and a significant increase in cutaneous perfusion (vasodilation/flare), consistent with menthol-driven cutaneous vasodilation relevant to peppermint-oil flushing.
