International multicentre patch-test study: air-oxidized R-limonene elicited significant contact-allergic reactions while non-oxidized limonene was largely non-reactive, confirming that autoxidation-formed hydroperoxides — not the parent terpene — are the sensitizers driving limonene contact allergy.

Among 5773 consecutive dermatitis patients patch-tested (2013-2020), 5.1% had positive reactions to oxidized limonene (and 7.0% to oxidized linalool), with most reactions appearing on day 3-4 and a significantly increasing trend over the period, confirming oxidized limonene as a common fragrance contact allergen.
