In 30 healthy women, 1,3-propanediol at 5%, 10% and 15% (alone or combined with butylene glycol and/or glycerol) increased skin hydration and improved barrier function at 15 min, 2 h and 8 h after forearm application; adding glycerol to 15% propanediol further improved the barrier and reduced transepidermal water loss.
