In vitro study using guinea pig skin found butylparaben penetration from liposome suspensions decreased as liposome lipid content increased, indicating absorption occurred mainly from the outer aqueous phase. Liposomes neither altered stratum corneum barrier function nor denatured skin proteins over the 30 h experiment.

In vitro diffusion-chamber study of aqueous butylparaben absorption through excised guinea pig skin found that polysorbate 80 raised the solubilized preservative concentration but reduced its skin penetration, and polyethylene glycol 400 also decreased penetration; penetration was related to preservative activity against test microorganisms.
