Review of the 'lanolin paradox': lanolin sensitizes a notable share of dermatology patients (especially on eczematous, ulcerated, or otherwise damaged skin) yet is well tolerated in cosmetics applied to intact skin; lanolin-sensitive patients often show false-negative patch tests to pure lanolin, and 30% wool-alcohol patch testing is an unreliable detector.
