On human skin, amorphous silica nanoparticles (42-291 nm) behaved size-dependently: only the smallest (42 nm) penetrated into the epidermis of barrier-disrupted skin, while larger particles did not. Cellular uptake by skin cells was also size-dependent and was reduced by particle aggregation.
