Case report of a 27-year-old man with dermatitis after using sunscreens and a deodorant who showed positive patch-test reactions to C12-15 alkyl benzoate 5% pet. at days 2 and 4, on both UV-exposed and unexposed sites (allergic, not photoallergic). Seventy-five controls were negative; first reported contact allergy to this emollient.

In vitro human-skin study found low dermal absorption of [14C]-C12 alkyl benzoate from the emollient Finsolv TN (dermally absorbed 2.97%; absorbed dose 0.41%). No parent compound reached the receptor fluid; skin esterases hydrolysed it, with benzoic acid (>93%) the main metabolite detected.
