In a 200-subject repeat-insult patch test, a 15% blend of 1,2-hexanediol and caprylyl glycol in carbomer gel and in a use-level cosmetic formulation produced no delayed Type IV hypersensitivity (sensitization) reactions, supporting the dermal safety of the preservative system.

1,2-Hexanediol showed broad-spectrum antibacterial activity (MIC 0.5-2% v/v) against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by depolarizing the cytoplasmic membrane; combining it with food-grade antimicrobials (macelignan, octyl gallate) lowered its effective concentration to 0.25-0.5x MIC against Gram-positive bacteria.
