Of 23 stratum corneum NMF components measured in 196 women, six amino acids including alanine (with arginine, asparagine, glutamine, glycine and histidine) correlated with higher facial skin hydration; their combined level peaked at ages 25-29 then declined with age, correlating with texture, pores, wrinkles and dullness.
