Human pharmacokinetic study (three dose groups, n=8 each) of percutaneous absorption from topical patches: even exaggerated camphor, menthol and methyl salicylate dosing gave low plasma levels (camphor peak ~41 ng/mL, half-lives 3-6 h), indicating limited systemic exposure after dermal application; not an irritation or efficacy study.

Camphor, a major active ingredient in topical analgesic balms and liniments, activated heterologously expressed TRPV1 at higher concentrations than capsaicin via a vanilloid-independent mechanism (active in a capsaicin-insensitive mutant) and desensitized TRPV1 more rapidly and completely than capsaicin. It also blocked TRPA1. Authors propose this underlies camphor's analgesic/counterirritant effects.
