In a vehicle-controlled UV erythema test in 40 volunteers, three lotions containing 10% hamamelis (witch hazel) distillate all showed an anti-inflammatory effect, with one lotion producing significantly greater erythema suppression than vehicle at 1.4 MED. Hydrocortisone preparations remained more effective than hamamelis.

In vitro study on primary human dermal fibroblasts: witch hazel, white tea, and rose extracts each significantly reduced IL-8 release (anti-inflammatory) and protected cells against hydrogen-peroxide-induced damage; however, the witch hazel distillate showed no anti-collagenase or antioxidant (Trolox) activity, unlike the leaf/bark extracts.
